Friday Night At the Meaningful Movies presents: "CONTROL ROOM"
"Control Room" is an incisive documentary about the role of Arabic news channel Al Jazeera during America's 2003 war in Iraq, the reporting of the war, and a sobering investigation of one of the most powerful weapons in modern military operations: the image. Filmed fly-on-the-wall and presented without narration, it begins in the days leading up to the start of the American bombing campaign in March 2003, and follows the reporting of 'Operation Enduring Freedom', through to President Bush's declaration - premature, as it turned out - that hostilities were over. Facilitated discussion with a representative from Tasveer films.

Biodiesel documentary: "Fat of the Land"
In the first kitchen-grease powered road movie "FAT of the LAND" follows the journey of five women who took to the highway in an ordinary '84 Chevy diesel van powered by used vegetable oil (actually they made biodiesel as they went). From New York to San Francisco the women caren across the nation stopping at greasy spoons, asking
for leftover frying oil to fuel their wacky cross-country adventure. Other pit stops in this documentary include interviews with biofuel engineers, a quick overview of how-to-do-it fuel mixing and conversations with the American public about our petroleum "dependence." more...

"Friday Night At the Meaningful Movies" presents THE BLACK PRESS: Soldiers Without Swords
"The Black Press: Soldiers Without Swords" is the first film to chronicle the history of the Black press, including its central role in the construction of modern African American identity. It recounts the largely forgotten stories of generations of Black journalists who risked life and livelihood so African Americans could represent themselves in their own words and images. It is as important today as in the past for Black media professionals to play a vigorous role not just in print media but also in the rapidly evolving information technologies of the future.
Naomi Ishisaka, editor of Colors NW Magazine will introduce the film.
Facilitated Discussion.
