Activists say the battle is far from over and have vowed to continue to block drilling in the Refuge. Two local filmmakers take a close-up look at the region's indigenous people and spectacular beauty. Achieving the Legacy of Brown v. Board: Preparing Underrepresented Minorities for Success
Although the 1954 decision in Brown was the first time the Supreme Court held that segregation was unconstitutional, the decision did not stand alone, but was part of a process that led to it and that continues today. The Supreme Court’s recent ruling on the University of Michigan's Affirmative Action case heightens Brown’s importance. That ruling reaffirmed the importance of diversity on college campuses by allowing the “narrowly tailored use of race in admissions decisions to further a compelling interest in obtaining the educational benefits that flow from a diverse student body,” [i] Understanding where we have been, where we are now, and where we may be going is critical to dealing with the problems of today.  more...
