Friday Night At the Meaningful Movies: “THE POWER OF COMMUNITY” with Sustainable Ballard
FILM: THE POWER OF COMMUNITY – HOW CUBA SURVIVED PEAK OIL, (60 min, Faith Morgan and Pat Murphy, 2006) AND SUSTAINABLE BALLARD WILL JOIN US! - "THE POWER OF COMMUNITY" documents Cuba's transition from a highly industrial society with large farms or plantations and reliance on fossil-fuel-based pesticides and fertilizers, to a society of sustainability with small organic farms and urban gardens. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1990, Cuba underwent the loss of over half of its oil imports and became a living example of how a country can successfully traverse what we all will have to deal with sooner or later, the reduction and loss of finite fossil fuel resources. The filmmakers document Cuba's successes for the future so that this knowledge would not be lost. "THE POWER OF COMMUNITY lets the Cuban people tell their own story and at the same time counters the prejudices many Americans have toward Cuba. This is a story of dedication to independence and triumph over adversity, and one of hope for the future. It gives hope to the developed world as it wakes up to the consequences of being hooked on oil. Representatives from SUSTAINABLE BALLARD will join us to explain how they are creating Sustainable Community right here in Seattle! More on Sustainable Ballard: www.sustainableballard.org - (Event is FREE! ..but Donations are kindly accepted).
