Friday Night At The Meaningful Movies: "THE YES MEN"
Film: “THE YES MEN” (82 min, Chris Smith, Dan Ollman, Sarah Price, 2005) - WTO, with a twist! . A hilarious tale of two pranksters who set out to bring down one of the world's most monolithic and mysterious agencies, the World Trade Organization. In 1999 two young anti-globalization activists created www.gatt.org, a website that mirrored the official site of the WTO but contained all sorts of highly-convincing but unlikely arguments and proposals. The site was so convincing that the duo received requests to speak at functions around the world as representatives of the WTO, and inspired by their success they decided to take things one step further. FILM ON DARFUR: “BEDEEKEE DARKEE” (“MESSAGE FROM HOME”) and A SPECIAL PRESENTATION BY THE FILMMAKER JEN MARLOWE
Film: “BEDEEKEE DARKEE - MESSAGE FROM HOME” (56 min, Aisha Bain, Jen Marlowe and Adam Shapiro, 2005). This is a rare opportunity to be one of the first to see this incredible film with exclusive footage, some of which is still in pre-release form, filmed where few reporters have gone before; and to get a first-hand report from the filmmaker about what's now happening on the ground in Darfur! Jen Marlowe will also lead an open Q&A discussion on the current situation in Darfur, and what we can all do to help end the conflict. The United Nations is reluctant to call it genocide. The U.S. government called it genocide, ...then dropped the ball. Over two million people have been displaced and up to 400,000 people have been killed due to political conflict in the Darfur region of Sudan; over 80% of these refugees are women and children. This film becomes a platform for the people of Darfur to speak for themselves; about their lives of tragedy as well as their strength and resilience. For more information on the film: www.darfurfilm.org or donkeysaddle@hotmail.com; For more on the crisis & action: www.savedarfur.org. All donations benefit the advance of this critical documentary work on Darfur.  more...

Friday Night at the Meaningful Movies: "Justice and the Generals" - Special presentation in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the martyrdom of Archbishop Oscar A. Romero
Film: "Justice And The Generals" (86 min, Gail Pellett, 2002). In late 1980, the bodies of four American women, three nuns and a lay missionary were exhumed from a crude grave in El Salvador. They had been abducted, raped, and murdered. Justice And The Generals offers unique insight into a new chapter in international human rights law, an important step forward in the campaign to bring military commanders to justice for crimes committed within their ranks. At the same time, as it follows efforts to hold human rights abusers accountable, JUSTICE AND THE GENERALS also maps the confusion, barbarism, and, ultimately, the tragic heart of a conflict whose wounds, over two decades later, are far from healed. Discussion facilitated by Dave Tatro from CISPES (The Committee In Solidarity with the People of El Salvador). (UPCOMING FILMS...)  more...
