We will share stories from our first journey to the Niger Delta in 2005 when we brought 19 Puget Sound residents with 21 Nigerians from all around Nigeria, to live in a small village where we completed the first library in this oil rich, environmentally devastated region. And stories from our second Journey to the poor coastal town of Axim, Ghana, where 15 US joined 14 Ghanaians in circle work, Town Hall meetings, educational/health outreach and building of an orphanage and community center. Also, starting at 6:40 PM, will be a 15-minute slideshow of a refugee clinic on the Burma-Thai border) - "TOTAL DENIAL" (92 min, Milena Kaneva, 2006) chronicles the landmark lawsuit brought against Unocal, a U.S. oil company, for torture committed by its Burmese government agents during construction of the Yadana oil pipeline. Bulgarian-born Milena Kaneva follows legendary activist Ka Hsaw Wa as he travels clandestinely through the remote jungles of Burma to interview witnesses and record testimonies of victims of corporate-financed human rights abuses. "We will not let them defeat us. We know the companies and their military partners have lots of money, guns, power and influence. But they do not have what we have. We have truth, we have justice, we have courage, and most importantly, we have each other to protect human rights and the environment." DISCUSSION WILL FOLLOW THE FILM: with LARRY DOHRS, member of the board of directors for the U.S. Campaign for Burma and founder of the Seattle Burma Roundtable.
