The World’s Go-To-Guy For Disaster Relief: A Talk With Todd Shea
Humanitarian Todd Shea will speak about his emergency and long-term relief work in Pakistan and Haiti at Seattle Central Community College on Thursday, May 20 and at the University of Washington on Tuesday, May 25. Todd's promising career as a singer-songwriter was interrupted by the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks. In New York to play at the famous CBGB nightclub - a gig that never happened - instead Todd emptied his musical equipment from his van, drove down to Ground Zero, and said, "How can I help?" The experience led to the discovery of a new vocation providing logistical support to emergency workers in the aftermaths of disasters. Todd worked in Sri Lanka after the tsunami, in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, and in Pakistan after the October 2005 earthquake there. He has remained in Pakistan and runs a hospital in the remote village of Chikar, but when the January 12, 2010 earthquake struck Haiti, he cut short a U.S. fundraising tour to spend six harrowing weeks there. Hear the extraordinary story of an ordinary American who is making himself useful in today's world. Times and dates below. Todd Shea's visit to Seattle is hosted by the South Asia Center at the Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies at the University of Washington and supported by Seattle Central Community College.  more...
