UW linguist Sandra Silberstein argues that 9/11 was not just about events but also about the words that shaped our understanding of and response to them. She has carefully dissected America's renderings of the terrorist attacks in presidential speeches, media texts, and eyewitness accounts. Her studies suggest that times of national crisis make us vulnerable to verbal posturing and detail how we suffer a loss of liberties in the name of "fighting for democracy". Dr. Sandra Silberstein, UW Professor of English and author of "War of Words: Language Politics and 9/11" will speak on July 30th at 7 PM. As a linguist Dr. Silberstein has extensively researched the consequences of language…how language shapes perception and attitudes. Her studies of presidential speeches and media reporting since 9/11 suggest that times of national crisis make the public vulnerable to verbal posturing and loss of liberties in the name of "fighting for democracy".
