“Broken Limbs”
"BROKEN LIMBS" (57 minutes, 2004, Jamie Howell & Guy Evans ) is a new film that looks at the plight of apple growers in the age of globalization, and points the way to sustainable US agriculture. Set in our own backyard, Wenatchee, "Apple Capital of the World". This pastoral valley prospered for nearly a century as the home of the famed Washington apple. But good times have vanished, and farmers are going out of business by the thousands.
Also, Michael Ramos, Director of Social Justice Ministries with the Church Council of Greater Seattle, will lead a discussion on current issues surrounding the efforts to maintain family farms, and the impacts of globalization on farm workers in Washington State.

Why Vote for a Change? Because US Census data confirms that voter registration and participation rates decline dramatically and consistently as household incomes decline. Poverty Action surveyed more than 350 people with low-incomes in Washington state about their voting habits and found that nearly half of those registered to vote had never voted. This severe under-representation of low-income voters translates directly into a lack of accountability among government leaders to low-income children and families in our state. The Vote for a Change campaign aims to increase low-income people's stake in voting and to make addressing poverty a priority for elected officials. Our efforts are focused in areas of South King County, specifically Auburn and Kent, where there are the highest numbers of people living on the lowest of incomes. In these areas, we go door to door at the neighborhood level to register voters, committing people to vote by signing a petition, and encouraging new voters to stay engaged and involved in the democratic process.
