From cafeteria food to sex ed, Moore looks at the benefits of schooling in France, Finland, and Slovenia. In Italy, he marvels at how workers enjoy reasonable hours and generous vacation time. In Portugal, Moore notes the effects of the decriminalization of drugs. Through his travels, we discover just how different America is from the rest of the world.
full description & details:
What would life be like in a culture that is not obsessed with maximum profitability for corporations, and where the quality of life for average citizens is top priority for public and private policy? Michael Moore?s newest movie shows us what it might be like and we don?t have to take his word for it, he takes us where it already exists!
First we go to Italy where a married couple describe their vacation benefits and work culture. The shock of what is possible is jaw dropping, as is the rest of the tour. We learn that the country of Portugal has legalized drug use, and abolished the death penalty but the crime rate has gone?.down! In Slovenia, we learn college is free for all who qualify academically from any country. They value the cross-cultural exposure for their own students. In Germany, we learn the law requires that representatives of labor need to comprise fifty percent of corporate boards of directors and managers actually value their collaborative cooperation. In Finland?s primary and secondary school systems, there is almost no homework or standardized testing and they rate among the highest in the world for student achievement. The most notable contrast with conditions in America is in their prison systems. Prisoners are treated humanely and their recidivism rates are lower than ours.
There are other examples as well but the questions stand, ?Can Americans do as well?? Are we able to stop class warfare and seek justice and happiness for all?
