About Healthy Skepticism:
The inspiration for Healthy Skepticism began 25 years ago, when Dr.
Peter Mansfield was a medical student. In 1983 during his final year
elective in Bangladesh, he conceived a project called the Medical Lobby
for Appropriate Marketing. MaLAM used letter -writing campaigns similar
to those of Amnesty International to successfully encourage
pharmaceutical companies to improve their marketing practices. In 2000
MaLAM Inc became Healthy Skepticism Inc. Healthy Skepticism is an
international non-profit organization which aims to improve health by
reducing harm from misleading drug promotion. It provides research,
education and advocacy services and is the largest international network
for academics and campaigners concerned about misleading pharmaceutical
marketing and related issues. The Healthy Skepticism website
(www.healthyskepticism.org) includes a library listing over 13,000
references relevant to drug promotion. As of 2008, Healthy Skepticism’s
electronic network includes almost 2000 people from 85 countries.
Healthy Skepticism’s main source of funding is subscription fees and
