full description & details:

Since 2004 Veterans for Peace and Evergreen Peace & Justice Community have been setting out markers for those killed in Iraq. We started with approximately 750 crosses; the number is now nearing 4100.

We maintain Arlington Northwest as a loving, though painful, memorial. It honors those who died. It acknowledges the shattered lives and dreams of their friends and loved ones. It reminds us all of the immeasurable losses and suffering associated with war. It allows those of us who erect it to hope that if we continue to confront our fellow citizens with this accounting, the reality of this war's horrendous costs will change their hearts and minds.

Arlington Northwest is a tribute to American troops who have died in "Operation Iraqi Freedom" It was conceived and driven by those among us who have lived through the horrors of war, our Veterans for Peace -- a tribute born of their personal losses and sorrows and their determination that those who died and those bereft should be acknowledged in a meaningful way.

It is also a tribute to the hope we have that a remembrance of these sad losses will jolt the depths of our greater compassion and humanity. We barely have the resources to memorialize American losses and as inadequate as we know this to be, it is hoped that our homespun memorial will transcend borders and extend empathy to all victims of war, everywhere, and somehow contribute to the decline of the culture of war.

One does not have to believe in war or agree to a particular war's validity to be grieved by a war's terrible human toll.

One need not to have had a personal relationship with those who died, or agreed with their thinking to see the loss and waste of their human potential. We only need to know that they have died to understand that their loved ones are left with a painful emptiness.

We erect Arlington Northwest to respectfully acknowledge this loss of lives and dreams. We must continue to maintain Arlington Northwest for those who come each time, seeking the small bit of solace and comfort we are able to offer.
