The First Dorpat Lecture in Psychoanalysis and Society presents
Lord John Alderdice
"TERRORISM, FUNDAMENTALISM, AND ROAD MAPS TO PEACE"

Lord John Alderdice, House of Lords member, will talk about his unique contributions as politician and psychoanalyst in the peace process in Northern Ireland and more recently in the Middle East at the first Dorpat Lecture in Psychoanalysis and Society on Friday, June 20th at 7:30pm. The event entitled "Terrorism, Fundamentalism and Road Maps to Peace" is free and open to the public and will be held at Town Hall, 1119 8th Ave, Seattle, WA 98101.
Creating a process that allowed greater understanding between traditional enemies was key to unlocking the Northern Ireland political impasse. Lord Alderdice, a psychoanalytically trained psychiatrist, President of Liberal International and until recently Speaker of the Northern Ireland Assembly, consistently applied these unique skills which helped to resolve the violent conflict destroying his society and his efforts were crucial in reaching the 1998 Belfast Agreement. Having spent his childhood witnessing the frightening violence in his Northern Ireland community that affected members of his family, Lord Alderdice chose a career in psychiatry and psychoanalysis, because, as he has written, "Armed only with non-analytic explanations of violence, our world community will not make sense of terrorist attacks like those of September 11, 2001"
With his engaging presence and passionate commitment to conflict negotiations Lord Alderdice will explore the very difficult question of the relationship between fundamentalism and terrorism, and how understanding these phenomena may assist in finding a road out of violence.

The Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study has been entrusted with the creation and oversight of the Dorpat Lecture in Psychoanalysis and Society series, which recognizes significant work in applying psychoanalytic understanding to social problems, and has been generously funded on behalf of Dr. Ted Dorpat by an anonymous donor.
Dr. Ted Dorpat, 1925-2006, was a psychoanalyst and forensic psychiatrist whose work was called "in the forefront of creative integration of psychoanalysis and contemporary thought" As a member and past President of the Seattle Psychoanalytic Society and Institute, Dr. Dorpat had an abiding interest in educating not only his students but the public as well in psychoanalytic principles. He authored 4 books and more than 370 scientific papers. When asked shortly before his death which psychoanalytic concepts he most valued, he relied: "nonviolence, compassion and communication"
The Northwest Alliance for Psychoanalytic Study is a Seattle-based, nonprofit interdisciplinary organization and is dedicated to making psychoanalytic knowledge available and useful to interested professionals and to the community at large in the Pacific Northwest.
